• About CacheSaver Like many people, you’ve probably found that increasing the size of the disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk. The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes before the cache gets saved, your data is lost. CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or”flushing”) the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so you can flush the disk cache manually. • Requirements CacheSaver requires System 7 or greater. It will display a red ‘X’ over its startup icon if there is a problem during startup or if you are not using System 7 or higher. • Installation 1) Drop the CacheSaver control panel on your System folder icon. When asked if you want to put it in the Control Panels folder, answer “OK”. 2) Restart your Macintosh. 3) Configure the options and delays using the CacheSaver control panel. Please remember to pay the shareware fee if you use CacheSaver! • Settings CacheSaver allows you to flush the disk cache at idle time, periodically, or with a hotkey. Turn on any or all of these features using the checkboxes in the control panel. Then use the sliding controls to adjust the time delays, and the “Set…” button to set the hotkey. Time delays can be set in either minutes or seconds - click on the “Options…” button to choose which one. You can also directly type in any delay setting by option-clicking on the appropriate slider. CacheSaver has been tested with time delay settings as short as one second. The overhead of frequently saving the cache is negligible in most cases (less than a 1% change in the time required for lengthy, disk-intensive tasks). Note that setting a very short delay effectively makes the cache “write-through.” Writes go directly to disk, while reads benefit from the data being cached, speeding up applications that repeatedly read the same files, like web browsers and compilers. • Shareware Registration CacheSaver is distributed as shareware.
